Dr. Morris Baker, Ph.D.
Goodwill Industries of Tenneva announced that President and CEO Morris Baker will begin a professional transition into a national leadership development role with Goodwill Industries International (GII), following nearly a decade of growth, stability, and community impact at Goodwill Tenneva.
Baker has been named Director of the Donated Goods and Retail Development Program, where he will work with Goodwill CEOs and senior leadership teams across the country to strengthen donated goods and retail operations, develop leadership capacity, and advance mission impact throughout the Goodwill network. He will continue to reside and work from Kingsport.
“Morris Baker’s leadership has been both transformative and deeply rooted in our community,” said Steve Hightower, Chair of the Goodwill Tenneva Board of Directors. “He is taking the experience and success built here and applying it at the national and international level. We are proud of the work accomplished under his leadership and confident in the organization’s strong position moving forward.”
During Baker’s tenure, Goodwill Tenneva experienced sustained growth in workforce participation, wages, mission services, and financial stability while navigating periods of disruption and change. The organization is well-positioned for continued success, supported by a strong leadership team and a clear mission focus.
To ensure continuity and stability, Baker will remain in his role as President and CEO for the next few months, working closely with the Board of Directors and leadership team. Following that period, he will transition into an advisory capacity, supporting the Board as it completes a search for the organization’s next CEO. Day-to-day operations, programs, and services will continue without interruption.
“Goodwill Tenneva is strong, focused, and mission-driven,” said Josh Fuller, Board Member and Chair of the CEO Search Committee. “The Board is not looking to change the strategic direction of the organization. We are incredibly proud of the leadership team and the work they’ve accomplished together, and we are committed to a thoughtful local and nationwide search as we identify the next leader to carry this important work forward.”
Reflecting on the transition, Baker emphasized the alignment of the new role with his long-standing commitment to leadership development and service. “This opportunity allows me to support Goodwill organizations across the broader Goodwill network by strengthening donated goods and retail operations and developing leaders,” Baker said. “It brings together leadership, teaching, and service in a way that fits this season of my life, while leaving Goodwill Tenneva strong, stable, and people-centered.”
Additional updates regarding the CEO search process will be shared as appropriate. Goodwill Industries of Tenneva remains committed to serving the community through employment, training, and mission services that promote dignity, opportunity, and economic mobility.
